There are many different artificial tooth solutions out there. So, which one is right for you? Obviously, everyone has heard the stories of dentures slipping out of place at embarrassing moments. That is a solution a lot of people consider. The problem is having to use the messy adhesive to keep them in place.

Some patients may have already considered getting dental implants but do not know enough about them to make an informed decision. That is where we come in. Why not come into our office to find out what the procedure entails? We are always here for you at Dr. Musto Periodontics & Dental Implants.

Dental Implant Information

Dental implants are a superior choice to any other option for artificial teeth. They are a permanent part of the oral cavity and will not slip out of place while eating or talking. Most people think the implants are a single piece but in reality, they are made up of three separate sections. The first section is drilled into the jawbone for a sturdy base. This is called the implant. The second component, called an abutment, is then secured to the implant and provides a solid foundation for the final component called a crown. The final component is the only section visible. We offer single tooth implants, for non-consecutive missing teeth. If you have several missing teeth in a row we can place a multiple tooth implant.

Dental Implant Procedure

While implants are an outstanding choice with regard to artificial teeth, they do take more than a single appointment to get placed. The first appointment entails an assessment and evaluation to make sure the patient's oral cavity is healthy enough to support the dental implants. If it is not considered healthy enough, other surgical procedures may be necessary to get it ready. These procedures could include tooth extractions, gum grafts, and bone grafts. All of these procedures are performed with the goal of getting the oral cavity as healthy as possible.

Types of Dental Implants

The most widely used implant is what is called an endosteal implant. This is what would be considered a standard dental implant. It is embedded into the upper or lower jawbone to support the abutment and crown. If a crown is not warranted or desired, the implant can support dentures, or bridges as well.

When the jawbones are lacking in bone mass, a subperiosteal implant is warranted. This is a metal framework placed on top of the gum tissue. Given time, this becomes fused with the jawbone at which time the implants can be placed.
